Mainstreet is the area's first smart growth community. From inception, an emphasis was placed on community gathering centers including parks and green spaces, a stocked fishing pond, fountains, and recreation centers.
Neighborhood entrance signs were made to mirror the style of the community, Southern and comfortable. The signs were made using discarded cobblestones from River Street in Historic Savannah - a testament to the character and style of the community.
Its highly interconnected sidewalks provide pedestrian convenience and safety where children can walk to school throughout their K-12 experience. The "Street Tree Program" plants trees between the sidewalk and the curb, forming a zone of safety between pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Narrower streets reduce the amount of impervious surface; thereby reducing the amount of rainwater runoff that carries pollutants to our rivers and streams.
As the community matures, the benefits of smart-growth planning will become even more evident. |
